So I went to the post office today and noticed that the flag was flying at half mast. And I thought to myself, "Who died this time? The post office isn't honestly flying half mast for Steve Irwin?"

Not that I didn't know that today is the 11th of September. I went to class today and growled my way through a Latin quiz with "9/11/06" scrawled at the top, and entitled my page of notes in Logic "9/11: Connectives".

I don't think about what happened on September 11, 2001 very often. Honestly, I don't. Not because I don't care. Not because I'm trying to move on, forget. To tell truth, I don't think about it often because it makes me angry. There's a lot to be angry about, and quite frankly I like being not angry better than I like being angry.

One thing that makes me angry is that, every time I think about that day, I hear someone in my head (or out loud, if there's a discussion going on) saying "On September 11th, I ..." or "Since 9/11 ..." That makes me angry.

The World Trade Center has become the Alamo of Modern America. It is the great war cry that unites people that would never otherwise acknowledge each other. "9/11: We Will Never Forget" has brought together conservatives and liberals like "Remember the Alamo!" banded whites and Hispanics together in 1836.

In other words: you're not fooling anybody.

I'm not interested in talking about how that day changed the world. I'm not interested in arguing over whether we're safer, smarter, more aware, less innocent, more racist, less free. I reallly don't care to hear about anybody's "culture of life/death/hate/fear/control" or any other sentence that has the words "culture" and "of" next to each other.

I believe that I could probably count on one hand the times that, in the last five years, I've heard the phrase "nine-eleven" without a personal agenda attached to it. And to the people whose agendas are attached to the blindly-uttered numbers, I have but one thing to say:

I hope you rot in hell.
